Synopsis:
Headstrong Lu Xiao Lu, who knows nothing except the working-class existence he was born into, grudgingly begins along the route he is supposed to go. At the age of nineteen in 1990s China, he feels pressured to conform to those around him and accepts a job at the town’s saccharin plant. He gradually adapts to the bureaucratic industrial routine, making the most of the circumstance by interacting with colleagues, flirting with females, and refusing to succumb to the expectations of people around him.
As Lu Xiao Lu makes his way, a striking vision of an economically developing China emerges; the promotion of a shared objective gives way to a bottom-line system that he perceives as insensitive to human satisfaction. However, owing to the bonds he forms, Lu Xiao Lu chooses to fight for the life he desires.
